Restoration Work to War Memorial in Whalley Lancashire

This project involved Restoration to the Stone Steps leading up the memorial & the installation of a disable ramp to the Parish Building.

Our Restoration Builders had short time schedule on this project. The Stone steps on the War Memorial had moved & needed realigning. We used a Hydraulic Lime Pointing Mortar to point the Stone Steps.

A new Disabled ramp was installed to the pubic parish building, this was constructed using traditional materials.

Disabled Ramp
Part of this project involved installing a Disabled ramp the Valley Hall. Our Building Contractors worked on this project in Whalley, Lancashire with the Parish Council. We undertook the works by hand to excavate the for the Disable Ramp as the project was only small works. The Builders had a small skip supplied to remove all the waste materials. The small village of Whalley has a busy road running through the centre, the hall & war memorial is just of the main road. Our Specialist Restoration Contractors have in the past work on War Memorials in the Lancashire area. The War Memorial just required the stone steps pointing with Lime Pointing Mortar.
Lime Pointing War Memorial
When our Building Contractors worked on this War Memorial in Whalley we started by removing all the cement based mortar from around the steps. The steps had slightly moved over time. This was allowing water to ingress the steps. Over time the freeze / thor action will enlarge the gap in the War Memorial steps. Once our Specialist Restoration Contractors had removed all the cement mortar from the steps they then flushed the joints with clean water to remove all the dust and debris from the joint in the War Memorial steps. Our restoration team then used a Lime Mortar to pointing the joint in the stone steps. The Lime Pointing mortar is soft to allowed slight movement in the stone steps. This will insure water will not ingress behind the stone steps of the War Memorial.
Install Disabled Ramp
Our Ground Working team in Whalley excavated the foundations for this disable ramp by hand. The waste and spoil for the excavations was removed from site with a local skip company. Our restoration team installed a concrete based for the Disable ramp. This concrete based was mixed on site due to the small amount of concrete required. When concrete foundation had set our Ground Works in Whalley then laid stone flags to the concrete foundation. The stone flags were laid on a cement based mortar. The Ground Working team insured the flags were laid with the correct falls. The Ground Works also installed a small kerbs to the outside edge of the Disable Ramp. The stone flags were then pointed in cement mortar to stop water ingress.
War Memorial Whalley
Here our team of Specialist War Memorial Restoration Contractors are working on the entrance to the War Memorial. We installed protective barriers to prevent the public for being injured due the course of the Restoration works to the War Memorial. Due to the stone steps on the War Memorial moving the gaps in the stone steps had to be Lime Mortar Pointed with a Lime Pointing Mortar. The Restoration Works undertaken by our restoration contractor was instructed by Whalley Parish Council. Builders and Groundwork's are sometimes not able to undertake specialist conservation works. Nearly every town in the county has a War Memorial. These are dedicated to the soldiers from 1st & 2nd World Wars.
Lime Pointing War Memorial Steps
Here you can see the stone steps after the Restoration works have been completed. The joints on the War memorial steps have been cleaned out, flushed and pointed with Lime Pointing Mortar. The Lime Pointing was sheeted with hessian sheets to protect it from drying out to quickly. Once the lime pointing had dried we cleaned the stone flags and steps. We have undertaken work on other war Memorials in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Cheshire the Restoration and Conservation works included Stone Repair, Lime Pointing & Doff Cleaning.
