6 silver street wakefield Black Swan
Project Info

We were contracted to complete repair works to 6 Silver Street Wakefield. The building is a Grade II listed timber framed building built in the early 17th Century. There are three storeys and a raised two bay centre with oversailing gable. It is believed to be the only jettied building remaining in Wakefield.

For the ground floor, stud work was installed. The north and west walls were insulated with plasterboard. A new suspended ceiling was installed.

The traditional lime plaster finish was reinstated to the west wall in keeping with the original traditional method.

A new timber staircase was formed along with a timber handrail. Basement access under the stairs was also formed.

Structural repair work was completed to the Chimney and the base was rebuilt from the trimmer to the first floor.

Our team prepared and painted the shop front. Timber splice repairs were completed. The window cills and door were prepared and painted, and new ironmongery and security locks were installed.

For the first floor, eight resin fixed Heli-bar restraints were installed. The Heli-Bars strengthen and stabilise masonry. The ceiling was plaster boarded with lapped joints and the west wall was plaster boarded.

The existing fireplace was closed over in matching brickwork and terracotta air brick installed.

All loose finishes were removed from walls. Five coats of limewash was applied to the brickwork. Paint was removed from the existing timber and linseed oil paint was applied. A new suspended ceiling was installed and lined with plasterboard. New ceilings were skimmed and painted with two coats.

Access was reinstated to number 8 Silver Street and security bars were removed to the closed-over door. New stud partition was formed and lined with plasterboard. The oak frame was spliced onto the steel beam using traditional joint, glue and screws.

For the second floor, the walls were cleaned, and a treated softwood trimmer joist was installed and coach-bolted to joists to support the ceiling. Mineral wool insulation was laid over the floor area, and a rigid foam insulation board with a strap hinge was fitted over the stairs to allow access to the second floor.
