UK Restoration Services have been awarded the project Contract, to complete work on the Warren Moor Chimney in North Yorkshire. The project is part of the Land of Iron, a Landscape Partnership Scheme, operated by the North Yorkshire Moors National Park Authority.
Land of Iron
150 years ago many parts of the North York Moors looked very different to the present day. The valleys and hills were filled with fire, smoke and noise as they helped fuel the industrial revolution. A short but intense period of ironstone mining and railway construction left a huge impact on the landscape and its communities that can still be seen today.
The Land of Iron project tells the fascinating story of this trailblazing period of industrial growth and exploitation. The project has recorded, conserved and protected some of the most iconic structures that remain, helped nurture the wildlife that has reclaimed these spaces, and ensured this important part of our history is not forgotten.
Land of Iron is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Lottery Fund (NLHF), the Authority, David Ross Foundation and many other partners.
Warren Moor Chimney
One of the key features of the Land of Iron is Warren Moor Chimney, perhaps the world’s only surviving fully intact Victorian ironstone mine chimney. It is Located approximately 12 miles south of Middlesbrough in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This impressive structure was built in 1865-6 to serve the surrounding mine, but was never actually used. The mine owners fell into financial difficulties, going bankrupt in 1868, and leaving the site abandoned. The site is being conserved by the Land of Iron scheme and will open to the public for the first time in summer 2020.
The building conservation work aims to conserve the outer brickwork of the chimney and address other localised issues, safeguarding this monument for future generations to enjoy.
The chimney is a Grade II Listed Building (1314914).
