Located in the heart of Darwen, Lancashire, Sunnyhurst Woods is a well-loved public park attracting visitors from across Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire and the wider North West region. As an experienced principal contractor specialising in heritage restoration, historic building conservation and masonry repairs, UK Restoration Services coordinated a complex programme of conservation works while maintaining public access and protecting the surrounding woodland environment.

As specialists in heritage restoration throughout Lancashire and the North West, our team employed traditional materials and proven conservation techniques to ensure compatibility with the original historic fabric.

Challenges of Working Within Sunnyhurst Woods, Darwen

One of the principal challenges of the project was delivering restoration works within an active public woodland environment. Sunnyhurst Woods is a popular destination for families, walkers and visitors throughout Darwen and Blackburn, requiring careful planning to ensure public safety while maintaining access wherever possible.

As Principal Contractor, UK Restoration Services implemented comprehensive site management measures including Heras fencing, Chapter 8 barriers, exclusion zones and clear signage throughout the works. These controls enabled restoration activities to proceed safely while minimising disruption to visitors enjoying the woodland park.

The woodland setting also presented logistical constraints. Access routes through the park required careful management for deliveries, scaffold installation and specialist cleaning equipment. Environmental protection measures were equally important given the proximity of watercourses, mature trees and sensitive wildlife habitats.

Masonry Conservation and Lime Mortar Repointing in Lancashire

A key element of the project involved traditional masonry conservation and lime mortar repointing to Huntington’s Bridge, one of the most recognisable historic structures within Sunnyhurst Woods.

Our skilled heritage craftsmen carefully removed defective mortar by hand before repointing using breathable lime mortars appropriate to the original construction. This traditional approach helps preserve historic masonry by allowing moisture to evaporate naturally whilst maintaining structural integrity.

The repointing works demanded meticulous attention to detail, particularly within areas affected by long-term weathering and biological growth common within woodland environments.

DOFF Steam Cleaning Specialists in Darwen and the North West

Alongside masonry repairs, our specialist cleaning division undertook sensitive DOFF steam cleaning to both Huntington’s Bridge and the historic drinking fountain.

DOFF cleaning is widely recognised by conservation architects, surveyors and heritage professionals as one of the safest methods of cleaning historic stonework. Using superheated low-pressure steam, the system effectively removes biological growth, algae, atmospheric staining and surface contamination without damaging the underlying substrate.

Prior to commencement, sample cleaning panels were undertaken to establish the correct cleaning methodology for each structure. This ensured optimum results while preserving the historic character of the stonework.

Joinery Repairs and Restoration of Historic Gates

Chadwick Gate and Potters Gate required specialist joinery repairs and decorative restoration works to preserve their historic appearance and functionality.

Damaged timber elements were carefully repaired or replaced using new timber sections manufactured to match the original details. Moisture testing, surface preparation and specialist paint systems were employed to provide long-term protection against the challenging woodland environment.

Temporary structural support systems were also installed at Potters Gate to facilitate safe repair works while protecting the historic structure from further movement.
