Heritage Cemetery Restoration and Conservation Works at Catterick Garrison Cemetery
UK Restoration Services was appointed as Principal Contractor by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to undertake a comprehensive programme of cemetery renovation and conservation works at Catterick Garrison Cemetery, North Yorkshire. Situated within one of the United Kingdom’s most significant military communities, the cemetery contains Commonwealth war graves, historic memorials and landscape features that require ongoing specialist care to preserve their dignity, appearance and historical significance.
The project comprised a multi-disciplinary programme of heritage repairs, landscape improvements, masonry conservation and cemetery infrastructure works. Acting as Principal Contractor, UK Restoration Services coordinated and managed all trades throughout the programme, delivering a carefully planned package of works designed to improve accessibility, enhance presentation standards and preserve important historic features within the cemetery environment.
Conservation Challenges Within an Operational Military Cemetery
Working within an active cemetery and remembrance landscape required a highly sensitive approach. The project demanded close coordination with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to ensure that all works were undertaken with the utmost respect for the site, its visitors and the servicemen and women commemorated there.
As with many historic cemeteries, years of weathering, vegetation growth and natural deterioration had affected several elements of the site. Boundary walls had become heavily colonised by vegetation, pathways showed signs of wear and localised deterioration, metalwork required refurbishment, and a number of memorial headstones had become misaligned through natural ground settlement.
The works also had to be carefully planned around ongoing public access, seasonal conditions and the preservation of the cemetery’s horticultural and heritage character. As Principal Contractor, UK Restoration Services was responsible for maintaining safe working areas, coordinating multiple work streams and ensuring that all activities were delivered to the exacting standards expected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Boundary Wall Conservation and Lime Mortar Repointing, North Yorkshire
A key element of the project focused on the repair and conservation of the cemetery’s historic boundary walls.
Extensive vegetation growth, including deep-rooted plants and invasive root systems, had established itself within the wall structure over many years. These roots had caused localised displacement of mortar joints and accelerated deterioration within sections of the masonry. To prevent further damage, all vegetation was carefully removed by hand, with roots extracted from the joints before specialist treatments were applied to minimise future regrowth.
Following preparation works, defective mortar joints were carefully raked out and repointed using a traditional NHL 3.5 lime mortar mixed with locally sourced sharp sand. Prior to repointing, the masonry was thoroughly dampened to improve bond strength and ensure optimum curing conditions. Joints were deep packed and subsequently protected to prevent rapid drying, particularly during periods of warm weather. Once partially cured, the mortar was brushed back to provide a durable and visually sympathetic finish consistent with heritage conservation best practice.
The completed works restored the structural integrity of the boundary walls whilst preserving their historic appearance and breathability.
Heritage Metalwork and Cemetery Gate Restoration, North Yorkshire
The cemetery’s entrance gates form an important visual feature within the site and contribute significantly to its overall character.
As part of the renovation programme, four sets of metal gates underwent comprehensive refurbishment. Existing failing paint systems were removed through careful scraping and sanding to provide a suitable substrate for recoating. Following preparation, a two-coat red oxide primer system was applied before receiving two coats of satin black metal paint, restoring both protection and appearance.
These works not only enhanced the presentation of the cemetery entrance but also extended the service life of the historic metalwork through the application of a robust protective coating system.
Cemetery Furniture and Public Realm Improvements
In addition to the conservation works, the project included the refurbishment of existing cemetery benches and public amenity features.
Timber benches were carefully prepared by removing existing weathered finishes and residues before being refinished using specialist exterior-grade Osmo oil. Multiple coats were applied to nourish and protect the timber while enhancing its natural appearance.
These improvements helped maintain the welcoming and respectful environment expected within a cemetery setting while extending the lifespan of key visitor facilities.
Pathway Repairs and Accessibility Enhancements to cemetery grounds in North Yorkshire
Maintaining safe and accessible pathways is essential within a cemetery environment, particularly at sites regularly visited by members of the public, veterans, military families and commemorative groups.
The project included extensive cleaning and repair works to the cemetery’s footpath network. Existing pathways were deep cleaned using specialist equipment to remove moss, organic growth and accumulated debris. Particular attention was paid to areas where surface contamination had created potential slip hazards.
Localised tarmac repairs were also undertaken to address areas of deterioration. Defective sections were carefully cut out, prepared and reinstated using hot-lay tarmac. Bonding agents and joining tapes were incorporated where required to ensure a durable repair and seamless integration with the surrounding surfaces. The finished pathways provided improved accessibility, safety and visual appearance throughout the cemetery.
Memorial Headstone Realignment and Conservation, Catterick
One of the most sensitive elements of the project involved the realignment of memorial headstones affected by settlement.
Working under the guidance of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, individual headstones requiring attention were identified and carefully assessed. Operatives established accurate alignment positions using string line references before excavating around affected memorials to release the settled foundations.
Each headstone was carefully repositioned using manual lifting techniques and specialist equipment before new concrete support beds were installed beneath the settled areas. Once levelled and aligned, the bases were pointed to provide additional stability and a neat, visually appropriate finish.
The works restored consistency throughout the cemetery while ensuring that the memorials continued to be presented in accordance with Commonwealth War Graves Commission standards.
Landscape and Groundworks Improvements in Catterick, North Yorkshire
The renovation programme also incorporated a series of landscape and groundworks improvements aimed at enhancing the overall appearance and functionality of the cemetery grounds.
Existing spoil heaps, soil mounds and accumulated debris were removed from site, with affected areas regraded and reinstated to match surrounding levels. These works improved both the visual quality of the landscape and the long-term maintainability of the site.
The project formed part of a wider programme of ongoing cemetery improvements, with additional horticultural works planned for future phases.
Delivering a Multi-Disciplinary Cemetery Restoration Project
As Principal Contractor, UK Restoration Services coordinated all aspects of the renovation programme, including heritage masonry repairs, lime mortar repointing, cemetery conservation works, memorial stabilisation, pathway improvements, landscaping and metalwork refurbishment.
The project required close collaboration with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, careful sequencing of works and meticulous attention to quality standards. Daily quality inspections and ongoing reviews ensured that all elements of the project were delivered to the high standards expected within an internationally significant remembrance site.
